Choosing your destination wedding dress

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Sticking with the topic of travelling for this month, as promised this blog focuses on choosing the right type of fabric for your destination wedding dress.

Why? Well because destination brides really have a lot more to think about than just finding a dress that will make them look a million dollars as not all fabrics wear well in hot climates, and the last thing you want to happen is for you to look shiny for your pictures because your body is not coping with the climate.

So here are a few of my tips to help make those dress decisions easier:

1. Light weight fabrics are always ideal in hotter climates. Natural fabrics like silk are great as they breathe in the heat and help you to feel cool.

2. However be aware that pure fabrics can crease more easily.  So try to go for mixed fabrics like Duchesse silk or Satin silk. My personal favourites are chiffon, lace and satin.

But giving yourself enough time when you arrive at your chosen location and following my tips on travelling abroad with your dress (see earlier February post) will enable you to eliminate any general travel creases that you may have.

3. If you have a dress with sleeves, its likely that you will sweat so either avoid or look into purchasing some underarm shields which should hinder any staining of your garment.

4. Tight fitting bodices again are prone to sweating so make sure that if you do have one that you dress in a cool place as things become harder to fit into if you are already hot and sticky.

5. And finally if you are opting for a backless, or tight fitting dress there are a number of lingerie options that are available that will help make your dress perfectly seamless. Check out the C-string if you are not having any luck with your normal G-string.

Episode 12: : Fad Dieting and Exercise Revisited

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Welcome to our first entry of the New Year, I do hope you enjoy and become one of our regular readers and commenters!

To kick off, as January is the month for new beginnings – if you have recently got engaged a big congratulations!

You’re probably feeling pretty overwhelmed right now, but if you’re like many of us who have indulged over Christmas getting your body back in shape this month is high on your priority list, whether you are getting married now or much later in the year.

That’s why I thought we should revisit a topic that I posted back in April on fad dieting and exercise. The post gave me the opportunity to speak to  Charlene Hustsebaut, co-founder of Positively Slim an online exercise and nutrition portal and Jacqui Agyepong an Olympic personal trainer about realistic goals for getting in shape for your wedding.

In our interviews we covered so much I couldn’t fit it all in so this time I wanted to highlight all those other practical tips left out the first time around to help you accomplish your wedding fitness goals.

To listen in full to what the girls had to say head to the Butterfly Journal podcast at www.pierrecarr.com/podcast it really only takes less than a minute to do, and  with an online portal that provides downloadable e-books, audio and video for busy professionals, you’ll hear that Charlene is a great believer in timing – giving yourself enough time to lose weight and not looking for a quick fix.

Whilst Jacqui a former Olympic athlete has a more back to basics approach, which means rather than trying to change your lifestyle to fit exercise in (which we can all admit we are prone to doing) we should build exercise into our everyday tasks. If that means getting off the bus a couple of stops before or leaving your car at home to do some walking instead then that’s what you need to do.

Whilst both women cover different aspects of exercise and fitness both of them have a realistic approach and no quick fixes come into the equation which I also believe is best.

Well I hope you find what Jacqui and Charlene say in the podcast useful as I definitely found it extremely fun to do and very informative.

I look forward to reading your thoughts and comments.

Michelle

Episode 4: Deciding on you dream dress….retail or couture what are your options?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

In the fourth episode of ‘The Butterfly Journal: An Inspiring Wedding Guide, host Michelle Pierre-Carr turns her attention to the centrepiece of any wedding; the wedding dress.  Joined by wedding specialists  Annalize Senol from Morgan Davies London, Yemi Osunkoya of Kosibah Creations and Catherine Shaw, founder of Allbone and Trimit, they discuss what brides should expect when deciding to buy their wedding dress from either a retail store or a couture designer.

Episode 4: Deciding on you dream dress….retail or couture what are your options?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

A wedding dress is the most meaningful and expensive item of clothing you will ever own. It’s also the centrepiece for your entire wedding and thanks to the likes of Facebook and one click uploading of videos, you and your dress will be seen not only by your guests but by  friends, family and complete strangers around the world in no time. So your dress, at the very least, should bring out your best features and make you look and feel a million dollars.

So where do you start?

Subscribing to a few bridal magazines is definitely the way to go, as each month you will get the latest fashion tips and trends to inspire you. But once you have an idea in mind, visiting a retail store or having your dress made is your next step. The experience will either fill you with joy or dread, depending on whether retail therapy is your thing.  That’s why for this month I wanted to focus on the retail and couture experience, giving you a firm understanding of the different options available.

So in the fourth episode of the Butterfly Journal podcast I speak to three experts with their own distinct style and insights into what a bride can expect from her dress buying experience.

Annalize Senol is manageress of Morgan Davies London – a boutique store in Islington whose stock ranges from celebrity designer Jenny Packham to Alan Hannah and Jesus Peiro to name but a few.  Annalize has been working for Morgan Davies for 10 years and believes the experience of going to a retail store gives you a starting point to try different styles, especially if you have no idea of what you are looking for, or the initial idea you were after just hasn’t worked.

A good bridal consultant should be able to talk to clients easily, but more importantly they should listen and read between the lines. Often what a client may think is best isn’t always what they end up with. By going to Morgan Davies London, a client will feel reassured in their decision and feel looked after from beginning to end. Find out more on what Annalize says in the podcast and her top tips on lead times and how many shops you should really go to.

If going to a retail store isn’t your thing then the idea of getting your dress made could be for you.  There are many different designers out there who will give you real alternatives. One example is Yemi Osunkoya from Kosibah Creations. He specialises in corsetry and celebrating the female form in the classical hourglass shape.

Whether you are well endowed up top or not, Yemi uses figure enhancement techniques to give you that ‘wow’ feeling on your special day and with 23 measurements that have to be taken off your body, you definitely will have all your bases covered. His experience also includes the option of making your bridesmaids feel like a million dollars too – so there’s no fighting over what they wear as he creates the same style to fit them individually rather than the whole group.  Here is an example of his flamboyancy, flair and attention to detail.

Finally if you aren’t looking for a traditional or flamboyant white dress Catherine Shaw from Allbone and Trimit steps in. With her theatrical background she concentrates on the idea that a dress should be worn as many times as possible and not just on your wedding day. Catherine prefers all things colour to get that special feeling over and over again. Catherine states that prior to Queen Victoria’s reign most people wore the best dress they had which often was coloured and not plain white.

Here is an example of one of her brides thinking outside the box opting for a green dress.

Catherine, Yemi and Annalize provide three different perspectives on wedding dresses, and there are many more, but the key is to look and feel fantastic on your special day.

I hope this has helped to you to understand the different kind of services that are available for brides and you can hear more by going to the Butterfly Journal’s fourth podcast at www.pierrecarr.com/podcast.

Episode 3: Fad dieting for your wedding…but do you need it?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

In the third episode of ‘The Butterfly Journal; An Inspiring Wedding Guide’  host Michelle Pierre-Carr tackles fad dieting amongst brides and grooms and speaks with three very different health and fitness professionls.  Charlene Hutsebaut co-founder of Positively Slim, explains the benefits of her online health and wellness programme.  Geeta Sidhu-Robb founder of Nosh Detox shares advice of cleansing and juicing and former Olympic athlete Jacqui Agyepong takes her through a personal fitness session and discusses what is the best and realistic way of getting slim and fit for your wedding day.

Episode 3: Fad dieting for your wedding….but do you need it?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

In an age where women strive to be a ’Size Zero’ and air brushing photos to remove every blemish of what makes us who we are is acceptable, it’s not surprising that brides will stop at nothing to go on that diet that will help them look great on their wedding day.

But if this is you - STOP!

I understand the need to lose pounds and look fabulous in your dream dress, but do it in the right way.  Fad dieting – essentially any diet that promises fast and easy weight loss – doesn’t address WHY you gained weight in the first place and definitely doesn’t educate you on the benefit of healthy eating. So the chances are, if you lose weight following a crash diet, you’ll put it all back on again.

At a time when you should be enjoying your engagement and planning your wedding, brides (and grooms!) can add more stress to their lives by counting calories and getting upset when things aren’t going to plan. That’s why this month I wanted to focus on getting brides the right information on the different weight loss and exercise options available and to offer guidance to losing weight or toning up in a healthy and more realistic way.

So in the third episode of the Butterfly Journal podcast, I speak to three very different women who are all in the health and fitness industry, but offer very different services for those who want to lose weight and get healthy.

Charlene Hutsebaut is the co-founder of Positively Slim, an online portal that deals with the whole person by covering exercise, nutrition and psychology through downloadable e-books, audio and video which helps you lose and maintain weight and get fitter.  Charlene believes in throwing away the scales (yes she does!) and thinking about getting your ideal body by making health a part of your life for the rest of your life, not just your wedding day. Hence why the portal was set up so busy people are able to get access anytime of the day.

On the food front we hear from Geeta Sidhu-Robb, founder of Nosh Detox. Her company makes and delivers healthy food and juices to a variety of people, including those who don’t have time to cook and people with special dietary needs, such as diabetics, for example.  Geeta believes it’s not only important to pick the dress of your dreams for your wedding day but also the right diet, to make sure you glow from the inside out so you can ooze ‘fabulous’.  With famous clients like Rachel Stevens and many others, one of Geeta’s tips is to ‘chew, chew and chew some more’ throwing in lots of green leaves for good measure.

And finally I spent the day being whipped into shape by former Olympic athlete, Jacqui Agyepong. Now a qualified personal trainer and sports massage specialist, Jacqui believes exercise is important for health and wellbeing to boost your confidence. But she has more of a ‘back to basics’ approach which means rather than changing your lifestyle to fit exercise in, we should build exercise into every day tasks. For example getting off the bus two stops early and walking home, taking the stairs instead of the lift and walking to the car with your shopping bags rather than pushing the trolley. Sounds easy enough!

So three different health and fitness views, but the advice from all is the same.

  • Start your new health regime as early as possible.
  • Losing weight in a healthy way will take longer than a month.
  • Make healthy living a part of life – and if you can, rope your husband to be into the plan!

Being a former international athlete myself, exercise and eating right has been a part of my life for years, but I understand that getting started can be very hard. However think of the benefits!

I hope this has helped to put fad dieting in perspective.  You can hear more by going to the Butterfly Journal’s third podcast at www.pierrecarr.com/podcast where you’ll also find details of our fantastic competition to win a luxury honeymoon in the Caribbean.
