Happy New Year! It has been a while since I last put my thoughts on a computer to you. So I hope you are all well?

If you have been following me on Instagram you will know that I have been making a number of changes to the services I offer and how I show up and all has gone a little quiet. But if I’m honest it has taken me a little while to put everything together. 🤦🏽‍♀️

So to stop the silence, I am allowing those who wish to work with me ( albeit from a distance) to take advantage of my shoppable boards. Every month I will post a shopping board and if you like what you see you can buy items straight off the board. Sound good?

The maxi dress is one of the most versatile pieces you can wear in your wardrobe. FACT!!

So if you are one of those people who say  ‘I have nothing in my wardrobe’ whilst starring at a full or often overflowing one?

You need to dig out your maxi dress girl, because clearly you are not utilising it as much as you should and being versatile means you can layer it up or down. But more importantly you can wear it all year round. So get yours out and have a read to see how you can make the most of it below.

In simple terms, the maxi dress is a floor or ankle length dress, that are form fitting at the top and loose flowing at the bottom. In my video here  I give you tips on how to wear them and why. But I thought I would add some more tips here because one I am nice like that 😁 but two if you haven’t got any or looking to buy new ones, there are things you should consider;

Length

Your maxi dress should never be too short because if it cuts you off at the ankles it may make you look shorter than you are. You also don’t want it to drag on the floor either. Always make a b-line for brands that carry petite lengths for those of you under 5’4″.

Bigger Boobs

If you are a well endowed lady please opt for a maxi dress with straps or a halter neck. Why? This will keep you together and prevent them popping out without warning.

Small Breasts

You can get away with a strapless. However by wearing one with straps it creates more definition around that area or if the straps are wide enough you can wear a bra to push those puppies up.  You may want  to also consider a belt around the waist so it shows some curves.  Watch the video below for more ideas.

Classic

Finally the other great thing about choosing a maxi dress is that they date back to the ’70s and aren’t going out of style anytime soon. They have major staying power due to the wide variety of patterns, styles, colours, and fabrics available. I would always suggest a solid colour in a classic shape as this will see you through changing fads; all you have to do is update an accessory or two.

Tip of the day

Unlike jeans, you can wear a maxi dress to work, a wedding, a dinner date, and the beach. Maxi dresses are a blank canvas — you can lounge in it on the weekend or transform it into a flashy show-stopper. Adding a cropped blazer can take you from the beach to the movie theater. Or change up your look by swapping flip-flops for classy wedges or heels. So have a go and see how many different styles you can create from a maxi dress?

Have you heard of up-cycling or reworked fashion?

If you haven’t don’t worry because as I promised back in May when I went on my first second hand shopping trip, I’m going to make a conscious effort to find out all about those brands that are a real alternative to the High Street for you that come under the second hand/vintage umbrella.

In its simplest of terms reworked means taking something old and adding something to it, to make it new. This maybe either cutting it or putting elastic in the hem to give it a twist, either way it’s changing the design a little to make it more personal.

With lockdown lifting, we are all finally heading back to our wardrobe to make an effort to dress up,  and reworked items could be the difference between blending in and standing out. With so many of us not wanting to have the same as someone else, finding unique pieces under the reworked umbrella is a real viable option.

That’s why I went along to meet Hannah from Saluto London who reworks bedding and textiles into outfits for the summer. Whilst this may not be everyone’s cup of tea. The video gives everyone real food for thought on ways to rework your own items if you don’t fancy buying them yourself. You can watch the full video here.

As well as Saluto, the restrictions imposed by the pandemic has led other designers to turn to materials they already have in their studio, instead of shipping in new fabrics. I want to highlight four other brands that might help you on your journey for a more sustainable wardrobe.

Bode: Designer Emily Bode repurposes antique textiles and objects to create off-kilter pieces inflected with a workwear tone. For each collection she sources disparate elements and brings them to her New York studio, where local tailors and seamstresses rework them using artisanal techniques such as the signature patchwork. The result is a selection of modern heirlooms that nod to folkloric craftsmanship through hand-stitched accents and panelled constructions and that are conceived to preserve cultural and historical value through fresh creative narratives.

Encore – Danish designer Cecilie Bahnsen, created this collection from surplus materials and sees the clear advantages to upcycling for customers is exclusivity “Once there isn’t any more fabric on the roll, you move on to another leftover roll which  no one else will have.”

ELV-is the “zero-waste upcycled denim” brand founded by Anna Foster. The brand sources unwanted jeans from vintage warehouses across the U.K. and transforms them into fun fresh pairs designed and produced in East London.

Ahluwalia: Designer Priya Ahluwalia made her name by repurposing textiles that already exist for menswear. This year she has teamed up with womenswear brand Ganni to offer an up cycled collection that will be available in Ganni stores worldwide and online in limited quantities.

Tip of the day: 

If doing it yourself isn’t your thing you can find reworked clothes everywhere. Depop, Ebay, Etsy and even Urban Outfitters all give amazing options of reworked clothes.

I’m just going to get to the point. Is your wardrobe ready for the season? I mean we have been locked down for so long, working from home, juggling the kids and generally in a more relaxed state, that now we are being asked to step out are you and your wardrobe ready?

If you’re not, that’s ok,  as comfort, you will be happy to know, will and still is a thing for this year. But I want to help you take the necessary steps to get you ready, so today I want to talk to you about your wardrobe.

Before lockdown and may be during, fast fashion has enabled many of us to stuff our wardrobes to full capacity whilst not breaking the bank. But how many of us find ourselves still moaning in the mornings that we don’t have ‘anything to wear’?

If that’s you then this is where a capsule wardrobe could be the solution. But what is a capsule wardrobe you may ask?

A capsule wardrobe simply put is a limited collection of clothes that coordinate well and can be worn in a number of different ways to cater for multiple occasions.

The items are made up of separates and include a handful of seasonal pieces you can change with the unpredictable British weather. But please note I am not advocating a capsule wardrobe for everyone because for some, this just won’t work.

But if you want to spend less time and money on clothes, but still want to look good then a capsule wardrobe is a real viable option, as it creates an easy-to-understand framework that makes shopping and getting dressed in the mornings infinitely easier, as well as making your wardrobe clutter free.

Liking this so far? Well the next question I guess you’re thinking is so how do start?

How to start one or just to get your wardrobe in a place that you know what’s in it,  is to start with a clear out.

1. Take every single piece of clothing out of your wardrobe and consider the last time you wore it, if it’s been more than six months pop it into storage or donate to charity.

2. Then, you’re going to want to build a base wardrobe of pieces that transcend trends. These are staple pieces that you should take time to source; make sure they fit properly and are made from the best quality fabrics you can afford.

For most women, this will involve some combination of the following: a pair of tailored trousers, denim jeans that look good with heels and flats, a neutral shirt, T-shirts for layering, a little black dress, a trench coat, high heels and a pair of boots.

Depending on your personality all these pieces will vary and in my video  I take a look at second skin tops (or body suits for some) which is a piece that should be in everyone’s wardrobe. They can be plain or print but simply work with items that are already in your wardrobe. Have a watch here, but before you head off here are some of my second skin tops suggestions below;

Printed second skin tops are the perfect way of adding fun to your wardrobe coming in a variety of colours and styles. I love this long sleeve mesh from from Kai which is a colloboration with print designer Adebusola Adetona of Grapes Pattern Bank that promotes that it is designed for women with every kind of curve. 😍

For those of you who are lovers of florals, these second skin tops just keep on giving and they are great way to add texture to a muted more neutral colour wardrobe. This black, blue and green top from Richard Quinn is made from light velvet with a high neck and a concealed back zip that ensures a second-skin fit.

If prints and patterns aren’t for you, you will always find plain tops that can work and at H&M you will always find staples at a reasonable price point. This one comes in plain black or bold pink and purple too so you aren’t limited.

Tip of the Day: Having a capsule wardrobe is not for everyone but by simply editing your wardrobe so that you know what’s in it has huge benefits. Such as when you shop you know what to add so you are shopping for statement or staple pieces that work with that skirt or trousers or jacket you currently have for example.

And for those who like what you read and want to embark on this route, please note it can take some trial and error to find the right mix as this will vary depending on your lifestyle and where you you work. But once you have it just right, it will make your life so much simpler all you will need to do is add in a few seasonal pieces depending on the time of year such as good quality knitwear, a warm coat or camisole tops.

I’m talking handbags today. Simply because March is here and new Spring Summer Collections are rolling out.

Handbags are one of the most coveted accessories women can own, whether it’s a designer bag from Prada, Hermes or Chanel down to Zara and your local independent. They set the mood for your outfit and your shoes. So as we are almost out of the thick of winter and our winter coats will soon be a be a thing of the past. I wanted to shift our focus to a few Spring trends.

This season’s handbags are taking shape in several diverse forms. But it’s not just the shape that I want to highlight but also the bold colours they come in. On my video below I show you how to style handbags coloured ones at that with coloured outfits. But before you scroll down, just take a minute to digest the colours that will be around for the season to come so you can make an informed decision.

Kelly Green: Last season was about pale green but this season is all about the bold. I am loving this Tote handbag from Stand Studio with its striking green quilted shape.  It’s made from patent faux leather with a puffed silhouette, featuring twin top handles and an adjustable strap.

Saffron: If you want to smile all day long, carry this vivid shade of yellow. I am loving this semi circle design clutch bag from Charles and Keith with a croc-effect finish. Use it as a clutch to add visual interest to an minimalist all-black outfit, or turn it into a shoulder bag with the adjustable chain.

Bubblegum Pink: It seems like bubblegum pink has been popping up everywhere in fashion, now the colour has made its way to Spring handbags. For those wanting to experiment with their accessories this season, try this striking colour to add some visual interest to an outfit of basics. This tote bag by Jacquemus comes with an adjustable and extendable handle and a pressure loop to make a knotted handle. However if the price tag isn’t quite right for you, watch my video below as I feature a similar bag in blue at less than half the price.

Crimson: A true power colour, red is another shade big on the runways. Use it as a replacement for your black handbags to spice up an outfit. I love this bag from Givenchy’s ‘Antigona’ which is one of fashion’s most famous bag families. This ‘nano’ version is scaled down to small but perfectly formed proportions.

Tangerine: A major trend last spring, tangerine is still holding strong into the new year. While it is certainly bold, you’ll be surprised to find how many looks your new orange bag will go with. This  tote is aptly named ‘Bento’ after the Japanese word for ‘lunchbox’. It’s been made in the UK from smooth leather and has a cube-like shape with dramatic ties that knot at the open top to keep your phone, cardholder and lipstick secure.

Tip of the day: Wearing bold coloured accessories be it bags or shoes gives you that option if you are not quite there with wearing a coloured outfit. Its amazing how wearing all of one colour be it white or black with a coloured bag will make you stand out. Give it a go. While we have been in lockdown let’s be honest, no one is dressing up. Loungewear is the buzz word and even if you are on zoom calls all day, you and I know, that from the waist down you have been doing casual, casual, casual 😝 .

It’s true that we work smarter and perform better when we feel put together. But there’s a difference between a stained grey hoodie and loungewear that is both exceedingly comfortable and surprisingly stylish.

So what is loungewear you may ask?

Well loungewear is defined as casual clothes suitable for relaxing and laying around at home. Pyjamas and sweat pants are an example of loungewear. But I won’t be talking about the former no, no, no. I’m showing you ways of styling it up so that you can go out knowing that you are on trend 🙂.

My video below gives you the visual aid to show you how to style loungewear and I’m showcasing my new love, arm sweaters. But if you are still unsure, its known that retailers are reporting seeing major spikes in searches for sweatpants and hoodies. The fact that we are home schooling as well, hasn’t helped either. Why would you want to wear anything else accept loungewear when you are dealing with the needs of your child/children all day?

For some people before the pandemic, loungewear might have been just some cut off shorts and an oversized t-shirt. But in todays situation we see camisoles, matching pyjama sets, overly girly nightgowns, ribbed leggings and seriously warm pullovers as the norm. Here are some of my favourite super warm sets along with some cute styles for those who don’t need the added heat.

Loungewear Styles

Tie Dye:  Taking one of the biggest loungewear trends of 2020 to cashmere, these tie-dye garments from the Elder Statesman are each dyed by hand, meaning every set is unique.

Sporty Styles:  If you like a more traditional fitness look, how about this one from Olivia von Hall which features the sporty stripe detailing.

Wide Pant Style: If you like the wide leg pant look then head to Cassola, this soft set is crafted from regenerated cashmere and hand knitted in Italy.

Jumpsuits: For those of you who love a jumpsuit, I’ve got you, with this cosy knit romper from Lunya. 

Finally, if you like a playsuit and you are ok with not being super warm,  then I think Love the Process have some great pieces particularly this one.

Tip of the Day: For those of you who haven’t embraced loungewear but want to try it, I would say why not champion brands that care for people and the planet. Shopping with sustainability in mind is becoming ever more important  and the quality of the material is also second to none. The above items though will get you started.

If you are in lockdown at the moment and not going anywhere but you still have to attend zoom meetings and online calls, I have a solution for you especially if you are fed up of wearing the same thing! Drum roll please!!

Have you considered wearing your summer wardrobe in winter to get a whole new wardrobe?

If you haven’t then you are in for a treat because if you are anything like me, I store away my summer wardrobe to give myself a bit more room for the winter and don’t always remember what I have. But in this climate if you have worn enough lounge wear and the same shirt/blouse for your work meetings then then its time to get your summer outfits out and wear them in winter to give yourself a whole new wardrobe.

Now I am not saying that you literally sit in your summer wardrobe when the heating is off, clearly not! What I am saying though is, you can wear your summer outfits quite easily by adapting them  with a polo neck, a shirt, a belt and so on to get another look.

Before you disappear though, while we are in January and we can all appreciate that its cold and gloomy outside and adding to the fact that you may be detoxing your body or drying yourself out from all that alcohol you have consumed. I have set a #gobrightchallenge on my Instagram pages.

All you have to do is post some images of yourselves or your kids in your brightest summer outfits and tag me either @styledbypierrecarr for yourselves and your friends or @pierrecarr for your kids to get involved. This is running all month so you have time to raid your summer wardrobe and post and tag me once a week until the end of the month. Obviously the more you do it  the more chance you stand being featured on my feed or stories and the best one will get 20 percent off my wardrobe detox service.

My wardrobe detox can be done virtually from anywhere around the world so you don’t have to worry. But it’s a great way to work with a professional like me and start from zero with clothes that still fit you and you like. Anything else is just taking up room and should be donated. But I can get into that later. This service offer applies to kids as well as adults if you wish get help for yourself or your mini. But I thought it would be useful for you in this difficult time as this year I will be doing my best to educate, inform and inspire.

Tip for the day: When detoxing your wardrobe firstly clear out everything and lay it on the bed so you can see everything. Look at the quality of the items and see if they look a little tatty, got bobbles etc and decide whether you love it or it needs to go. Do a little at a time to avoid overwhelm and as a suggestion I recommend sorting out 5-7 items before you take a break and go back to it, if you need too.

I would also suggest sorting through your accessories too. Jewellery boxes are for rings, bracelets and earrings everything else needs to be hung up to see.

I have started to ramp up my festive gift ideas for you and this week I’m talking shoes. Unfortunately not heels yet, but they will come. Instead I am looking at chunky trainers and shoes for those who love comfort, but want to keep their feet looking stylish.

First up is the Converse Run Star Hike Trainers, if you love Converse then you will love these and they will make great gifts too. Stepping away from trainers, if you are looking at boots, there are three that are definitely worth considering. Firstly Mango’s leather high boots which comes in brown https://fave.co/3pzO5tV. I opted for this as they only come in brown and if you are into brown as opposed to black as some clients are, this would my preference.  But if you don’t mind black the Arket’s chunky boots are my alternative https://fave.co/3kAHpIj. They come in two other seriously cool colours Khaki and light yellow.

Now if you like the light yellow colour of Arkets but don’t like the black sole. I’ve got you, check out this alternative by Jill Sander at Harvey Nicols https://fave.co/38KFUVo . This boot excudes style and I have to say the beige on beige rocked right looks very nice.

Finally if you appreciate the old school then the last two will take you way back to your childhood. First up is Proenza Schouler’s Mary-Jane wide T-bar shoe crafted from glossy patent leather and rests on a chunky lug rubber sole with a low-block heel. Alternatively how about Proenza Schouler’s white topstitching black loafers. This is definitely a modern take on some college worn shoes I had.
